Tesla has made a strong showing on America’s list of top-selling vehicles for 2022, with the electric Model Y crossover breaking into the top 10 for the first time. According to data and analytics firm Motor Intelligence, the Model Y was the sixth bestselling vehicle in the country, beating out traditional top sellers such as the GMC Sierra pickup and the Honda CR-V crossover.
While pickup trucks remained the most popular vehicles in the US, the inclusion of the Model Y in the top 10 is a significant achievement for Tesla, which does not report regional or individual vehicle sales. However, the company did report delivering approximately 1.25 million Model Y and Model 3 vehicles globally in 2022. The Model 3 also saw strong sales, coming in at 13th place with 211,641 units sold.
“It’s no surprise that Tesla ranks that high,” said Michelle Krebs, executive analyst for Cox Automotive. “The brand, despite all the news and stuff, still dominates the EV market and it dominates the luxury market. A lot of that strength comes from the Model Y.”
The success of the Model Y and Model 3 suggests that Tesla’s popularity is continuing to grow, even amid a shakeup in the auto industry due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The company’s strong performance may also be a sign that electric vehicles are becoming more mainstream, as consumers look for more sustainable transportation options.
